Many items are more advanced and useful than any available items for sale at the moment but are no longer available. The alternatives do not match the specifications of older models which are much more convenient.
One example is a pencil sharpener that does not need any extra handles to press in order to insert the pencil. Just insert the pencil and then turn. The sharpener will automatically insert the pencil further and adjust its grip for optimum sharpening. It is still working perfectly but is no longer sharp and I've don't know of a way to sharpen or replace its blades.
Another is my current watch, a Casio TS-100. It has temperature sensor which can come handy but the most useful part is the database of world temperatures at any month of the year, complete with a small map of the world. It enabled you to select places near to the place that you want the temperature to be known. I'm still looking for this database either for my PC or Pocket PC. Those that are availabe may be more accurate but I don't need this accuracy for long-term planning. What is required is only the maximum and minimum temperatures at a particular month.
Wherever I travel, the most important item that I check is the temperature at that place at the time I visit that place.
It is a pity that many of these advanced items are lost to the people. It is just like the loss of our enviroments. I pity my children who cannot enjoy these facilities any more. It seems as though the world is getting more stupid by the day instead of getting cleverer. It can only lead to worldwide destruction, ultimately.
